Cataract Surgery Using Phacoemulsification Techniques

This cataract procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure involves using ultrasound waves to break up the cataract. This procedure begins with a very small, painless injection and a small incision of about 2.5 mm long is made. Since the lens is about 5 to 6 mm in diameter and the incision is only 2.5 to 3 mm, the surgeon needs to fold the lens in half and inserts it through the incision and then unfolds the lens into the eye.

Lens: unifocal lens or multi-focal lens

Procedure Time: 15 minutes

Complications: Complications may occur with completely mature, advanced cataracts. This type of cataract is actually very hard and ultrasound waves can't be used to break the cataract, because it’s too hard. The surgeon may have to revert to the old method and make an incision of about five to six mm long. This procedure will take about forty minutes and involves about five to six stitches. The stitches are not removed.

Risks: 0.05%

Side Effects: eye may be a bit red for the first week

Anesthesia: The procedures normally is not performed under general anesthesia unless the patient is extremely apprehensive.

Pain: Pain associated with this procedure is generally minimal, unless in case of infection which is very rare and is treated immediately with intensive antibiotic drops. This is typically a short term condition.

Post Procedure:

• Patient may resume normal activities the day after procedure.
• Procedure usually requires regular antibiotic eyedrops for about a week.
• Strenous activities and swimming should be avoided for the first 30 days.
• This procedure results in a self-closing wound and is water tight after 30 days.
